What it does

Most AI tutors know everything about everything — which means they'll confidently explain a concept your professor defined differently, or answer a question that has nothing to do with your exam. Course Companion Tutor is different: you load your own syllabus, lecture transcripts, and readings once, and from that point on the skill operates strictly against those materials. Setup takes 90 seconds. The included course-companion-setup-guide walks you through dropping your files into Claude Project Knowledge (Claude.ai) or a ChatGPT Custom GPT — step by step, both platforms covered. After that, you have five modes you can switch between at any point: TUTOR (Socratic or direct explanation, referenced to the specific chapter you're studying), QUIZ (5–20 questions from your uploaded materials, with remediation for wrong answers), STUDY GUIDE (structured outline notes for an upcoming test), PROJECT COACH (draft feedback and guiding questions — not ghostwriting), and CONCEPT CHECK (paraphrase a concept and get corrected on the spot). Quizzes and study guides output as printable HTML; tutor and coach modes stay conversational. This skill is built for AP students cramming for the May exam, undergrads who can't afford $80/hr tutoring, grad students working through dense theory, and certification candidates drilling a specific topic bank — anyone who has course materials and wants a study partner that has actually read them. Load it once per course and reuse it all semester. Bundled resources include quiz-generation-patterns, socratic-teaching-patterns, and project-coaching-vs-doing so the skill handles every mode correctly from session one.

Frequently asked

Does it quiz me on random facts or does it actually use my uploaded lecture notes and readings?
It only uses what you upload. If a concept isn't in your loaded materials, it won't generate questions about it — and it'll tell you that rather than inventing something plausible. The quiz-generation-patterns reference ensures every question is drawn from your actual source text.
Will it just write my paper if I ask it to?
No — and that's intentional. PROJECT COACH mode follows a strict coaching framework (bundled as project-coaching-vs-doing.md): it asks questions about your argument, points you to relevant sections in your readings, and reviews drafts you've written. It won't produce a submission-ready paragraph on demand, but it will tell you exactly what you need to figure out to write it yourself.
Can I use this for college courses where the professor uses a custom textbook or proprietary slides?
Yes — that's exactly the use case it's built for. As long as you can export or copy the text (PDF, DOCX, plain text, copied slides), you can load it. The skill doesn't care whether it's a published textbook or your professor's 47-slide deck from Week 3.
Does this work in ChatGPT or only Claude?
Both. The setup guide includes separate instructions for Claude Project Knowledge (Claude.ai) and ChatGPT Custom GPTs. The five modes work identically on either platform once your materials are loaded.
Can I use an AI study tool like this for multiple courses at once?
Yes, but keep them separate. Create one Claude Project or Custom GPT per course so materials don't bleed across subjects. The setup guide explains how to do this in under two minutes per course.
